House Republicans finalize deal on short-term funding bill but major hurdles remain to avoid shutdown
A group of six House Republicans reached a tentative agreement on a short-term spending plan that includes GOP principles but still could face tough odds in the chamber and has no chance of passing in the Senate, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Even though the six members – three from the House Freedom Caucus and three from the Main Street Caucus –reached a tentative agreement, concerns remain that the entire House Freedom Caucus is not on board, and some GOP lawmakers are worried the deal could still blow up.
The framework represents an agreement by two factions of the GOP, but there is still no guarantee it would have the full Republican support needed to pass within the conference.
The agreement would be a 31-day continuing resolution that includes the House-passed US southern border bill but without an e-verify provision. While the Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs would be maintained at funding levels, other agencies would face a roughly 8% cut.
This is a breaking story and will be updated.
