FT readers: your favourite places to eat and drink in Milan

Nestled on the wide tree-lined Viale Umbria, this restaurant — family-run since 1921, with elegant wood panelling and a relaxed atmosphere — offers specialities from Piedmont and Lombardy. The veal with tuna sauce, caperberries and crackers is a must either as a starter or a main for a lighter lunch, and the cotoletta alla Milanese (Milanese-style breaded veal chop) is one of the best I’ve had in the city. For the more adventurous, there’s cervella di vitello fritta, fried veal brains served with a pomegranate mayonnaise — another classic dish done to an exacting standard here. [As for] the wines, excellent reds complement the meatier side of the menu.

Masuelli has been my neighbourhood trattoria for more than six years and, although this mention of it runs the risk of putting a gem in danger of oversubscription, I always feel compelled to share its charms with others. With its friendly yet never overstated front-of-house, I am confident Masuelli will be able to extend its charms to a new raft of hungry visitors, as it has done for more than 100 years.
