Albemarle Corp. will use Caterpillar battery-powered mining equipment in its lithium mine site after the two signed collaboration agreements.

The Charlotte, N.C.-based supplier of lithium and other materials said Wednesday that it would use Caterpillar’s equipment as it attempts to make its Kings Mountain, N.C., mine the first zero-emissions lithium mine in North America.

In exchange, Caterpillar will be able to use Albemarle’s North American-produced lithium in its battery production. The two companies also agreed to explore opportunities to collaborate while researching battery technology.
