OTTAWA–Canadian wholesale trade looks to have picked up in August, rising strongly on the back of higher sales of machinery, equipment and supplies and miscellaneous goods.
Statistics Canada on Tuesday said advance results for wholesale sales point to an increase of 2.6% for the month. The estimate was calculated based on a weighted response rate of roughly 58% and the statistics agency continues to collect data for August.
The estimates show that farm products sales jumped 6.1%, matching the increase in machinery, equipment and supplies sales. Sales in the miscellaneous goods sector were up 7.6%, and strength was also noted in personal and household goods, motor vehicles and parts and building materials and supplies. Sales of food, beverages and tobacco products was 0.4% lower on-month.
Earlier this month, Statistics Canada reported that wholesale sales excluding petroleum, oilseed and grain grew 0.2% in July from the month before on a seasonally adjusted basis to 81.33 billion Canadian dollars, the equivalent of $60.32 billion. Total wholesale sales, the measure the data agency is transitioning to, were up 5.3% on-month to C$128 billion.
The data agency is scheduled to release official August trade data Oct. 16
